"Most importantly, the thing I will take most from this experience is the urging from the panelists not to be afraid.

REVIEW PROCESS
A distinguished panel of renowned experts in their respective fields evaluates all the participants within each YoungArts category to choose the YoungArts Winners. The final adjudication results in national recognition for the winners' work and talent as well as an opportunity for monetary awards.
The YoungArts scores are based on the careful evaluation of all materials by panels in each artistic discipline. The YoungArts evaluation process consists of a holistic approach rather than a discrete scoring of various aspects of ability in a given art form. Scoring is a subjective evaluation by a group of established artists in a given year. It is intended as a grade for this particular program and not as a definitive evaluation of your artistic ability and potential.
Each participant is scored between 1 and 10. Ten represents finalists invited to Miami, nine represents Honorable Mention award recipients and eight represents Merit award recipients. The remaining participants are scored from 1 to 7. A score of four is the median score representing the panelists' expectations for the average ability of a 17 or 18 year old artist who is competing on a national level in a particular art form. It is possible, therefore, to have been regarded above or well above average by the panelists without having received an award.
YoungArts Finalists are evaluated against a standard of excellence within their chosen discipline, and do not compete against their fellow honorees.
The Board of Trustees of NFAA is honored to have several world-renowned artists serving as Artistic Trustees. These Trustees recruit panelists, observe the preliminary/intermediate adjudication process in November and again during YoungArts Week in Miami, and advise the Board on current trends and developments in each artistic discipline. |
